About Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

French landscape painter who bridged the Neoclassical tradition and Impressionism. His silvery, atmospheric views and poetic "souvenirs" of remembered places softened landscape into mood, while his quiet figure studies were prized only later. Generous and widely imitated, he influenced the Barbizon painters and the Impressionists. He died in 1875.
