About Francisco Goya

Spanish painter and printmaker who rose to the top of the royal household in Madrid and portrayed the Bourbon court without flattery, as in "Charles IV of Spain and His Family". An undiagnosed illness in the winter of 1792 to 1793 left him permanently deaf, and his work turned towards war, superstition and cruelty, above all in "The Third of May 1808", painted in 1814, and the print series "The Disasters of War", which was not published until 1863. Between 1819 and 1823 he covered the walls of his house outside Madrid with the Black Paintings, including "Saturn Devouring His Son", with no intention of exhibiting them. He left Spain for Bordeaux in 1824 and died there in 1828, and is often described as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns.
