About the painting

Painted in June 1889 from the window of van Gogh's room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the view was completed from memory by day. Its swirling, energetic sky over a quiet village and a towering cypress is one of the most recognised images in Western art. It has been held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941.
